Nearly five years ago, six Uighurs, former detainees of Guantanamo Bay prison, were temporary resettled in Palau.
Today, five still remains, while one resettled in Turkey with his wife last year.
On September 6, during a press conference with the media following the conclusion of the Post Forum Dialogue in the Marshall Islands, U.S. Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell was asked to comment on their status.
She told the media that the United States government is very appreciative of Palau for accommodating a place for the Uighurs.
She says the U.S. supports what Palau has done and appreciates their humanitarian assistance.
Secretary Jewell further says the U.S. continues to be available to provide support to Palau until a permanent solution is sought for the Uighurs.
