The capital of Majuro has put up thousands of dollars and countless hours of work to clean up the streets, refurbish and repaint buildings in preparation for the 44th Pacific Islands Forum next week.
The Marianas Variety reports that dozens of people in Majuro lent a hand in cutting grass, trimming shrubs, sweeping sand off the road and picking up debris in the streets.
Foreign Minister Phillip Muller expressed appreciation to the community for their assistance saying, “we are thankful to the community and community leaders for doing their part.”
Businesses are also taking part by renovating and repainting their facilities.
The Variety reports that the activities have been ongoing for the past three weeks following a meeting with community leaders and local businesses.
About a dozen thatched roof huts are also being built for the arrival of Forum leaders and their delegations. Palau President Tommy Remengesau Junior, First Lady Debbie Remengesau and a delegation from the national government are expected to attend the annual leader’s meeting.
The Northern Pacific last hosted the Forum in 1996, when the Marshall Islands hosted the meeting for the first time.
