Palau Senate have rejected President Tommy Remengesau Junior’s first Special Prosecutor nominee.
Dan Dorfman an American attorney who was nominated to the position in early July received seven ‘yes’ votes and three ‘no’ votes during the Senate August 19 session.
The voting was shy of two votes required for confirmation. Although Dorfman do not have experience in criminal prosecution, the President in his appointed letter stated it is overcome by the fact that he possesses significant experience in complex civil litigation and criminal defense.
In addition, the President noted that his background as a rabbi “will prove to be a useful way for Dorfman to connect with our spiritual people.”
In 1998, Dorfman graduated from the University of San Francisco with his law degree and has since practiced law in the states of California and Illinois.
The Special Prosecutor position has been vacant since Michael Copeland resigned in 2009.
Dorfman’s nomination will be reconsidered in the next Senate session.
