On June 20th, a 31-year-old Yapese man was sentenced to three months in jail in Hawaii for two separate peeping tom incidents.
Hilo Circuit Judge also placed Paul Waathmad on probation and ordered him to complete 100 hours of community service.
According to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, Waathmad was originally charged with one count of second degree violation of privacy and second degree unauthorized entry to a dwelling, a felony that carries a jail sentence of up to 5 years, but in a deal with prosecutors, he pleaded no contest to two counts of second-degree violation of privacy, a misdemeanor.
During his hearing, his attorney described him as “victim or circumstance” who was “caught up in a maelstrom of hysteria.”
His attorney also suggested he wasn’t guilty, but took the plea deal as he feared deportation to Yap if he was convicted of a felony.
Speaking through a Yapese interpreter, Waathmad apologized to the hostel owner and the court.
Waathmad was accused of two separate peeping tom incidents at the Hilo Tropical Gardens Hotel in 2011.
