The Marshall Islands Alele Museum is in ruin after 30 years of service to the Marshalls community.
Newly appointed Acting Director Bonny Taggart, describes the Alele Museum, which also houses the nation archive and public library as, “grim with no destination”.
She says the facility looks like “the bottom of the sea as the roof continues to leak”.
Historical artifacts, archives and other valuable items housed in the museum are reportedly left in flooded rooms with no power or air conditioning.
“Because of the water damage, if you just put your hand on the windows they will fall out.” reveals Taggart.
According to information found on the Marshall Islands Journal website, the walls in the museum section are covered with mold and many of the display cases are damaged beyond use.
The museum, which was established in the early 1980‚ also houses the National Preservation Office and the National Archives.
It’s not clear if there are any plans to restore the facility.
OTV contacted Taggart, but have not received any responses as of this news report.
