President Tommy Remengesau Jr. is set to depart to the U.S. on June 8 to meet with U.S. Congress members regarding the Compact review.
The President will be meeting Palau’s Chief Compact negotiator Billy Kuartei who left to the U.S. last week, Palau Ambassador to the U.S. Hershey Kyota and the Republic’s legal counsel on compact matters.
The delegation will reportedly meet and speak to several U.S. Congress members and officials ahead of the Congress hearing on the Compact agreement scheduled for June 10.
The agreement has been pending in the U.S. Congress for more than two years.
In February this year, the U.S. Senate rejected the Compact agreement, which was attached as a rider to the U.S. Full Year Continuing Appropriations Act. Since then the agreement has been deadlocked in the Congress.
In April, during the Joint Committee Meeting between the U.S. and Palau, U.S. Ambassador Helen Reed-Rowe expressed the administration’s commitment in getting the compact approved soon.
