Although international assistance and response to the Marshall Islands’ drought disaster has helped in easing water shortages, reports indicate that food security continues to be a problem.
Tom Vance, the Marshalls National Water Advisor explained to Radio New Zealand that while water-making units have helped in hydrating drought-affected populations, it hasn’t helped with food security.
Vance explained that in Enewetak, one of the affected islands, most of its local crops have collapsed. The island is also having problems getting any food in.
Other affected islands are also continuing to suffer from health problems as a result of high salinity.
New Zealand has offered to provide assistance in delivering food to Enewetak and water making units to islands with high salinity.
