Two members of the Guam Army National Guard have been killed in Afghanistan, remains of one of the two soldiers have since arrived in Guam.
On May 18, Guam Governor Eddie Calvo announced their passing as he placed the nation in a state of mourning.
Specialist Dwayne W. Flores and Sergeant Eugene M. Aguon both died last week when their convoy was struck by a suicide bomb.
The Governor asked for prayers from every Guamanian for the families and friends of both soldiers. Governor Calvo expressed, “there are no words to describe the overwhelming grief of our island on this tragic day.”
Calvo said the Guam National Guard’s adjutant general has committed all resources necessary to take care of the families as they go through this most difficult time.
In early May, about 600 members of the Guam National Guard arrived in Afghanistan as part of the largest deployment of Guard members in Operation Enduring Freedom.
In addition to the two soldiers from Guam, four American employees, and nine Afghan civilians were killed from the attack.
