A planned $1.2 million dollar renovation on the Pohnpei State Hospital has been completed with major work done. 22 soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 6th Engineering Battalion and 30 Pohnpeian construction workers completed the renovation in early April 2013.
The workers along with the U.S. soldiers replaced the old roof with a new roofing system that lowers the temperature in the hospital. The team also installed new ceiling tiles, drywalls and painted the hospital anew. Old wirings were brought up to code including installation of fixtures, switches and ceiling fans.
Lt. Nicole Thompson, who led the team revealed in her report that the plumbing throughout the hospital was in a poor condition prior to the renovation. But through the renovation phase, new toilets, sinks and faucets were installed.
This renovation, according to reports is the first that the hospital has undergone since it was built in the 1970’s. During the re-dedication ceremony last month, Governor Ehsa thanked the team and urged hospital personnel to maintain the new renovated facility.
