In a move to address lack of Palauan citizens certified and employed in skilled jobs, President Remengesau Jr. has introduced a bill titled ‘Skilled Palauan Workforce Act’.
The bill, which would focus on equipping, training and certifying Palauans in skilled trades such as auto mechanic and small engine mechanic could address employment issues and provide opportunities as well as address wages said President Remengesau during this week’s press conference.
A Vocational Certification Program would be implemented through Palau Community College (PCC) in certifying Palauan citizens to become “employable” says the President.
In addition, a gross revenue tax (GRT) deduction of 200% would be applied for employers encouraging them to hire locals instead of foreign workers.
More than 30 percent of foreign workers are employed as skilled workers dominating Palauans in the field. If this act becomes law, it could affect hundreds of foreign workers employed in this field.
