A new Director has been appointed to head the Bureau of Public Safety following Director Novert Yano’s resignation on April 10. Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr. appointed Ismael Aguon, current Deputy Director of the Financial Investigations Unit (FIU) as the Bureau’s new Director.
Aguon, who has served in the law enforcement in both the CNMI and Palau was appointed due to his many years of service said the President. Recommendations from Attorney General Victoria Roe, who served as the Acting Director of the Bureau and the respect from fellow officers also helped to secure his appointment.
In appointing Aguon, President Remengesau asked the new Director to develop a youth program to act as an alternative to jail for juvenile offenders, and to also focus on drug issues.
Aguon takes over the position from Novert Yano, who resigned after being placed on leave for more than two months.
Yano and the Deputy Director were placed on leave to allow for an assessment of the Bureau. According to the President’s Press Office, Jennifer Olgeriil, the Bureau’s Deputy Director remains on leave until April 25.
