A major fire in the Marshall Islands’ capital city of Majuro has destroyed two family businesses.
The fire allegedly started at about 5:30 am on Friday April 5, which then quickly spread through to Skyline Enterprises and other neighboring businesses. Within an hour, the fire spread to G&L Enterprises, one of the major clothing retail stores in the city.
The Majuro Fire Department and Airport Fire and Rescue, who immediately responded, faced challenges in putting the fire out with limited water storage and poorly functioning water hydrants. Both the Skyline and the G&L Enterprises including a warehouse were completely burned down.
Two women who lived in a four-story apartment building next to Skyline were injured from jumping out of the window to avoid the fire. Both women were immediately transported to the Majuro Hospital for medical care.
According to reports, both establishments are family-operated businesses that have been around for over four decades.
The fire was reportedly started at an apartment before spreading down to other businesses.
