Palau’s National Hospital Open For Emergency Care Only

By Kassi Berg

Following Bopha’s Super Typhoon landfall on the Republic of Palau, Palau’s National Hospital has been closed.  As of December 5, 2012, it has opened its out patient facility for urgent care only.  Services will be limited to an emergency requiring immediate medical attention.  No announcement has been made when regular services might be resumed.
As a consequence of the lack of power, water and shared community shelter, there are attendant healthcare concerns.   Palau’s Ministry of Health has issued a public announcement involving food and environmental hygiene and has asked the public to take preventive measures to avoid the spread of bacteria.
With limited medical care facilities and medical doctors on the island, the Republic must minimize all immediate public health threats to avoid any outbreaks and infectious diseases to Palau’s small population.
