In September this year at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly, President Tommy Remengesau made reference to typhoons and storms stating that the Global Warming doomsday is already set in stone if nations fail to act.
And that as leaders they must take all necessary actions to eliminate the current threat and called upon “Leaders to Lead”.
Now two months later at the 19th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP19) Palau reiterates this, reflecting on the short recovery time in between typhoons.
Bopha struck in December last year and less than 11 months later Haiyan hit Palau, barely allowing enough time for the country to recover from Typhoon Bopha.
Ambassador Dr. Caleb Otto, Palau’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations stated at the COP19 that Palau is resilient and wants to work hard to recover but when typhoons occur more frequently with greater intensity – its hard to respond and recover which has become real issue for the country.
He moved on to say that he hopes the Warsaw COP will make a difference and that something concrete comes out of the conference not just business as usual and carry on.
Furthermore, the global community must reduce emissions, together. Now.
The nineteenth session of the Conference of the Parties is currently being held in Warsaw, Poland from November 11-22, 2013.
