President Tommy Remengesau Junior on April 7, 2014, publicly expressed support for American attorney Victoria Roe’s resignation as the Republic’s top prosecutor.
A press release to the media states “the President regrets that the AG’s tenure was limited, but understands her reasons for leaving and respects her decision.”
Further adding, “The President is grateful to Ms. Roe for her service to the nation and people of Palau. Ms. Roe has shown an unwavering dedication to her job and to the rule of law in our nation.”
Earlier this month, Attorney General Victoria Roe, who has served in this capacity since the beginning of this administration, announced her resignation citing the difference of opinion with the Minister of Justice.
In the press release, the President’s Office defended Roe regarding the U.S. State Department Trafficking In Persons report controversy stating, “The Attorney General never should have been a target in this matter.”
The President went on to commend Roe for efforts to reform and strengthen Palau’s juvenile justice system, the Bureau of Public Safety where she temporarily served as the Acting Director, and her work in fighting all crimes in Palau.
Roe’s resignation will take effect on April 8, 2014.
