One of Palau’s most senior and experienced lawmaker has resigned from his committee chairmanship position claiming lack of leadership in the Senate.
On January 14, 2014, during the first day of first regular session for the new year, Senator Hokkons Baules submitted his resignation letter to Senate President Camsek Chin.
Senator Baules, who previously served as Vice President of the Senate until he was replaced by freshman Senator Phillip Reklai last year resigned from his position as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and State Relations.
In his letter addressed to Chin, Baules reportedly claims that his decision to resign is based on the Senate President’s “poor leadership”.
However, Chin claims the productivity of the Senate over the past year is evidence of his effectiveness as the Senate President.
The chairmanship position has not been filled since Baules’ resignation, and its uncertain if Senator Surangel Whipps Junior, the current Vice Chairman of the committee would move up to the Chairmanship position.
