About 2, 000 residents of Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands received an early Christmas gift last month when high-speed Internet was extended to them.
An agreement between the Marshall Islands National Telecommunication Authority (NTA) and a U.S. Army contractor allowed for the access of high-speed Internet to the residents, who in the past dealt with dial-up Internet services.
Tommy Kijiner Junior NTA General Manager says the project was under negotiation and process for a few years prior to its approval late last year.
He says bandwidth to Kwajalein is provided through Guam and the U.S., which he says NTA is providing at a competitive rate.
The United States military require high speed Internet in order to manage missile missions in real-time, but until last month, the high-speed connection did not extend to homes in Kwajalein.
Kijiner revealed that a contractor based in Kwajalein will be in charge of installing the hardware that provides high-speed Internet to each household in the base.
