Arizona State Senator John McCain took time out of his family vacation in Palau to address the ninth Olbiil Era Kelulau where he expressed support for the approval of the renewed Palau-U.S. Compact pending in the U.S. Congress.
On the eve of December 26, 2013, Senator McCain, his wife and two children were received as honorable guests to the OEK’s Third Joint Session at the Senate Chamber in Ngerulmud, Melekeok.
In addressing Palau’s elected and traditional leaders, Senator McCain expressed that the long delay with the U.S. funding for the renewal of the Compact is deeply frustrating both to Palau and the U.S.
McCain stressed that he does not want anyone in Palau “to see this delay as a reason to question America’s commitment to Palau.”
“We cannot, we will not, allow the political spats of Washington to cause us to let you down. Your friends in Washington will continue fighting to move forward and implement the renewed Compact”, stated McCain. Further stressing, “We will get it done.”
He went on to express appreciation towards Palau’s ongoing contributions to the U.S. national security interests and the countless ties the two nations share.
“Palau may be a small nation, but it plays an outsized role in America’s foreign policy. And for that, my country is profoundly grateful.”
Following his address, the OEK through House Joint Resolution 9-53-8S bestowed Senator McCain the title of Palau Honorary Citizen in recognition of his support, contribution, assistance and friendship to Palau and its people.
The Joint Session was followed by a dinner reception at the Rotunda of the Legislative Branch Building for Senator McCain and his family along with local dignitaries.
This is reportedly Senator McCain’s third visit to Palau.
