On September 6, the World Bank announced a new project that would improve telecommunication, namely telephone and Internet connectivity in the North Pacific.
Axel van Trotsenburg, World Bank’s Regional Vice President for East Asia and the Pacific announced the $1 million dollar grant project during his official visit to Pohnpei, FSM.
The project named “Telecommunications and ICT Technical Assistance Project” is aimed to help attract new investment and promote competition in the telecom sectors in Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia as well as reduce service costs.
Trotsenburg says the project is an important step for Micronesia. And as part of a broader program of support, it will help connect people to each other, to the wider Pacific region, and the world.
In addition, the World Bank also announced it will support preparations for a possible project connecting Palau and the FSM to an underwater fiber optic cable from Guam, as part of the Pacific Regional Connectivity Program.
