The Marshall Islands government is calling on Australia to support its climate change initiative ahead of the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum.
According to Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat, the Marshalls is calling on Australia’s leaders to agree to approve the Majuro Declaration for Climate Leadership, an initiative for urgent action on climate change.
Minister Tony deBrum, who is in Australia this week highlighting the drought disaster and record floods, said Australia is crucial to the success of Declaration.
He told the Pacific Beat that “anything that the Pacific Islands do in terms of climate change must have the blessings, the support and the voice of Australia and New Zealand to the outside world.”
He says Australia have circles of diplomatic friends far wider and more powerful than the Pacific.
Such connections must be used to draw attention to the fact that climate change is now.
De Brum further warns that there are two million potential refugees from the Pacific should climate change continue the way it is now.
