The Palau fire department recently participated in the Pacific Islands Fire and Services Associations’ (PIFSA) eight annual general meeting held in Fiji.
Ron Ngirachereang, Palau acting fire chief participated in the regional meeting at the invitation of PIFSA.
Ngirachereang told OTV that the meeting was a way for Palau’s fire department to seek assistance in improving its fire service.
Along with delegates from Fiji, Cook Islands, Samoa and other South Pacific nations, Palau presented and provided updates on fire services.
Challenges faced by the fire department were also reported such as limited resources and the need to upgrade its equipments and train its personnel.
Ngirachereang also notes that more sub-stations are needed.
Another challenge noted is that there is no opportunity to maintain a stable base of trained firefighting personnel.
Ngirachereang hopes that assistance would be extended to the department through PIFSA and expressed appreciation to the association for inviting Palau to participate in the regional meeting.
