On May 31, 2013, Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie honored Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr. for his conservation and environmental efforts.
The Governor and other distinguished guests highlighted the President’s achievements such as the Micronesian Challenge, a regional commitment by Palau, the Marshalls, FSM, CNMI and Guam to conserve 30% of near-shore marine resources and 20% of terrestrial resources.
The Nature Conservancy coordinated President Remengesau’s visit to Hawaii. During his visit, he also spoke at UH Maui College and on the Big Island sharing stories about how Palau is balancing local needs and outside interests while protecting natural resources.
In addition, Remengesau also took the opportunity to attend the President’s day events organized by the Palauan community on Hawaii.
The Palauan community organized events celebrating the national holiday over the past weekend welcoming Palauans living all around Hawaii and the U.S. continent.
