An underwater demining project is underway for April or May by the Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS) following the launching of the project and its Palau office on February 22, 2013.
Takayasu Kakehi, JMAS Palau Office Representative says it’s an important undertaking as majority of depth charges found in Palau’s underwater is releasing chemicals that are extremely dangerous to humans.
The project is set to begin by removing depth charges and other unexploded ordnances at Helmet Wreck, but plans are underway to assess and survey other sites.
The project aims to provide a safe ocean environment free of unexploded ordnances or UXO’s left over from WWII nearly 60 years ago.
