The President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) Emanuel Mori has expressed support for the controversial ETG investment proposal in Yap State.
In his February 1 letter to Henry Falan, Speaker of the Yap State Legislature, Mori cited that after extensive discussions in Yap “I have concluded that it is in the best interest” of the state and the FSM to allow the company to continue implementing its proposed tourism investment project.
The controversial project, which proposes to invest in a number of infrastructure projects to develop the tourism industry in the state, received much criticism from the fairly traditional community.
According to Mori, the outlying issues raised by the Concerned Citizens Group were a result of lack of understanding of issues and facts surrounding the proposed project.
Early on the project received support and disapproval alike, but has now gained the full support from the traditional leadership particularly the Council of Pilung and the Council of Tomil, according to Mori.
The massive investment is considered an important development in light of the termination of the Compact assistance in 2023.
Despite the many challenge faced and mixed feelings about the project, Mori urges the legislation to set differences aside and embrace the rare opportunity.
