On January 30, several days after the top officers of the Bureau of Public Safety were placed on leave, Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr. placed Bureau of Public Works Director on a 30-day administrative leave.
Public Works Director Techur Rengulbai, who has worked for the government for more than 30 years, was placed on leave to allow the new administration to assess the current state of the water and sewer operations in the Republic.
In his letter to Rengulbai, President Remengesau explained that the persisting challenges plaguing the water and sewer system constitute a national priority that requires the government to take immediate action. He explained that the action to place Rengulbai on leave does not constitute a dismissal, demotion or suspension.
On the same day that Rengulbai was placed on leave, the President appointed Capital Improvement Projects Manager Brian Melairei as Acting Director saying that he’s experience as CIP Manager provided him with strong skills and experience to deal with the issues that the water and sewer operation face.
It is unclear if Rengulbai will return back to his post in 30 days, however Remengesau stated that if more time is needed to complete the assessment of the Bureau’s limitations, then his leave mights be extended.
