A young Palauan man passed away over the weekend of wounds sustained from a stabbing attack in Palau’s hamlet of Meyuns.
21-year old Tirone Chiokai, who is believed to be a student of Palau Community College (PCC), was reportedly attacked by an underage Palauan male for unknown reasons. He was rushed to the Belau National Hospital at around 3:00 am on January 10 where he underwent surgery, but unfortunately died the next day.
Chiokai underwent two surgeries while hospitalized, but a major blood vessel was severely wounded during the attack. Wounds sustained from the stabbing attack led to severe blood loss and internal hemorrhage causing his death.
The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and the Bureau of Public Safety confirms that a suspect has been detained in relation to the incident, but because the suspect is a minor the case has been sealed and no further information can be provided to the public.
In 2012, two separate murder cases gripped the nation as each case involved a young male suspect. The crimes prompted the country’s Council of Chiefs to declare a national crisis on the increasing number of violent crimes involving dangerous weapons.
